Microwaves have drastically changed our way of life through telecommunications and mobile phones. If we spread them too intensively, do they also affect the life of insects?
Electrochemical experiments with microwaves improve the insight into light-induced processes of energy conversion. In photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical solar cells, only those electrons can be measured that leave the semiconducting solar absorber through the connected wires. Those that are lost through recombination processes inside cannot be examined. Microwave radiation can detect and track such electrons. When microwave measurements are combined with classical photovoltaic measurements, solar systems can thus be much better characterised, investigated and optimised (Refs. 61, 62, 87, 161, 253, 286, 346, 357).
